It's been fun NICU but we're being upgraded!!!!

That's right!!! It's time for Carter to leave the NICU and head to the 12th floor!!!! Mike and I could not be more excited about this news and are happy to hear from the doctors and nurses that Carter is doing so well that they feel comfortable moving him. :)

I came in this morning after rounds and our social worker came in to say hello and then she said "Congratulations! I hear Carter is being moved to 12." To which my response was... "Wait, what?!" I spoke with our nurse, who has been wonderful and taken care of Carter so well and she confirmed the good news. Carter will be leaving the NICU and head to the 12th floor to stay until he has been given the okay to go home. The 12th floor is the general floor where the babies go either after being in the NICU, or being born and a lot of the nurses on that floor at one time worked on the NICU floor.

Carter's bowel and bladder has continued to look good and he continues to poop and pee so they are not worried about a catheter and won't be unless there is a major change in his bowel and bladder movements. As for his brain, while he is here they will continue twice a week ultrasounds but his ventricles and head size have remained stable or "unchanged" as the doctors like to put it, so he can be discharged and then we would just make weekly visits to Mott's for his cranial ultrasounds.

His back wound is looking fantastic and is healing really well. Both Mike and I have learned to change his dressing and will be able to do this from home too until it heals.

Although Carter may still be in the hospital for another 2-3 weeks with his feeding, this is amazing news and we are beyond thrilled to be moving floors after 12 days in the NICU. Carter has been such a strong little boy and we know that he will continue that trend. After all, how many babies can have a surgery when they are only 24 weeks old, in their mom's stomach, make it through that surgery, and stay in there for another 10 weeks with no issues, before coming out 6 weeks early with Spina Bifia, (where all signs are looking great, although this does not get rid of anything he has and things can always change, we understand that) and be ready to move to a different floor?!

The only thing we are still working on is Carter's feeding which we know is an issue due to his age. He is not yet 36 weeks so his sucking hasn't quite been perfected but he is starting to make gains. Carter gets 50ml of milk at each feeding and today (for his 9 and 12:00 feeding) he took 30 of the 50! These are great signs and we know that this will only get better but that it will take time. Once his feeding tube is out and he is taking 80% of what we are giving him they will give us the all clear to take him home. I will be sure to keep you posted on how his feeding his going and when we will get the all clear to leave Mott's and bring baby Carter home.

In the meantime, here we are with our things packed and ready to go! Who knew that you would have so much stuff for just one baby?!

All packed and ready to go!!
  Can't forget the food ;)
Goodbye beautiful view...
