Double Digits... 10 Months Old

I have a 10 month old son, well technically I suppose I have an 8.5 month old son but since the doctor doesn't put him on a preemie scale anymore we haven't been either. Can you believe it?! What a month it's been for Carter, especially when it comes to the milestones he has been hitting and the growth he has made. I know I may sound like a broken record when I say that every month, but this month it's really true! Carter has been defying the odds with his Spina Bifida diagnosis and showed many doctors just how incredible he is.

Within the last month Carter went to his first mylo. clinic (http://babyhiltonspine.blogspot.com/2015/07/happy-sneak-peak-day.html), spends days at the pool with Aunt Emily, has had three sleep overs without mom or dad around, traveled to the west side of the state, visited with his friends Max and Claire, went to the zoo with his Gigi, aunts and Eli, rode a pony for the first time in his life, and enjoys car rides with his mom. It has been a fun summer and we still have a month to go before I have to head back to work, something that I'm not exactly looking forward to with having to leave Carter each day, but I know it's something that I am going to have to learn how to do :(.

The month of August is already pretty busy for our family. Mike is finally taking a vacation for the first time since our honeymoon and we are going to spend our time together as a family up north. At first the plan was to head to the east coast with trips to DC, Philly, and New York but unfortunately Mike got sick with the stuffiness and congestion, which got Carter sick and now finally got me sick and the last thing we wanted to do was to drive in a car for hours not feeling the greatest and walking around all day long to see friends and family while being sick. Hopefully that will be rescheduled for the spring.

Now back to how amazing this little victor has been. In the last two weeks alone he has learned so much. Carter has been learning how to do so many things with his hands. First, he is waving hello and goodbye to people and it's been great to see him make that connection. Carter has also learned how to start picking up food by himself and feeding himself!! He is a big fan of puffs (what a little miracle food there) and will eat some after lunch or dinner; sweet potatoes and bananas are his favorite. His last hand eye skill is clapping!! One day while Emily and I were relaxing at the pool and Carter was playing with his toys under the umbrella we started cheering for him and he relaxed those little hands of his and started to clap :) and now he cannot stop. It's the cutest thing I have seen him do when anyone cheers for him he just starts clapping.

Onto larger skills that Carter has conquered. CRAWLING!!! That's right we have a crawling baby who scoots himself around the house to get to toys and more specifically books. He really loves getting to his books and then rolling on the floor with them. I cannot contain my excitement and the fact that we were told that crawling may be something he would never do, so ha! While Carter crawls he does like to stop to turn around and look at you to make sure you're watching and at that point he will get into a 3 point yoga stance before he goes back to crawling. Exciting things happening here in the Hilton household :).

Lastly, Carter has learned to go from playing on his tummy to sitting up by himself. This has been something that we have been working on with his early on physical therapist and I was thrilled to see that he can now do it all by himself. He enjoys rolling around and then when he is ready to sit up he puts himself into the splits, pushes up, and once he is balanced he cheers, naturally ;). I am so proud of this little boy and everything that he has been able to accomplish within the last month.

Even though we have been full of good news, we do have a busy month ahead of us. Carter has started PT with MOTT through his PM&R doctor which started this week. The great news was that his PT was really impressed with what he can do. He is practicing standing and being up on his knees with his knees together and not too spread out. At his appointment he even started to learn how to crawl up stairs with some support. We were told that while he is at his appointments in the future he will be working in standing and walking more!!!! This is HUGE and I cannot wait to see what he does. Unfortunately I won't see these great things happening during the school year but the good news is that Mike will get that opportunity to spend with Carter and I really like that the boys will get that time together.

On the 20th Carter will have to go in for his 6 month kidney and bladder test. Everything has been looking really good from the bladder and bowel aspect of things, at least from my perspective ;) However, every 6 months he will have to have this test done to make sure that he isn't having any urine reflux into his kidneys which can cause major issues. We are hoping for good news like last time and that we won't have to be back to urology for that test for another 6 months. Wish us luck!

Finally, on the 25th Carter will be going in for a surgery on his nether-regions. There are a few issues happening and his doctors were able to get something scheduled before the school year so I can be there for him. Luckily, although he is having 4 procedures in one surgery we were told as long as his breathing during and post surgery is strong he will be able to come home that day. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers during that time as we hope for a success and trip home that same day.

Until those two dates are upon us, Mike, Carter and I are going to enjoy our August together with our vacation and one very happy baby.
